News from the Grunigen Medical Library

ImageThe Forest J. and Dolores S. Grunigen Study Room, a newly renovated collaborative space in the Grunigen Medical Library, was dedicated in September 2017. Medical students and researchers use the room to study, collaborate and create. The room can seat up to five people and is designed to encourage group work. Students display content from their laptops and mobile devices on the room's 50-inch monitor. Researchers connect remotely with colleagues using their Zoom or Skype accounts and the room's webcam. Individuals who need a quiet space to study and reflect also use the room, which includes a whiteboard for impromptu brainstorming sessions, in addition to the collaborative technology.

On April 8, 2018, as part of National Library Week, the Grunigen Medical Library unveiled this year's READ poster honorees. For the past 12 years, the UCI Libraries have sponsored READ posters to honor prominent faculty in the School of Medicine and the Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing. We photograph each honoree with their favorite book and create a digital poster for each person, which we display at the Grunigen Medical Library, Ayala Science Library and Langson Library. This year, among others, we honor Professor Miriam Bender, Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing, Dr. Penny Murata, School of Medicine and Susan Christensen, Director of Medical Surgical Services at UCI Medical Center. Professor Bender works closely with Steve Clancy, our Research Librarian for Nursing, to include library research as an integral part of her curriculum. Dr. Murata has collaborated with Linda Murphy, one of our Health Sciences librarians, to design an evidence-based medicine assignment for 3rd-year medical students in the Pediatric Clerkship. Ms. Christensen actively refers nurse researchers to Steve Clancy for research consultations. If you visit our READ poster archive, you can see an archive dating back to 2006.
