With the end of winter quarter, the Transforming Knowledge/Transforming Libraries IMLS grant research team completed another round of successful collaborations with faculty from the ethnic studies departments at UCI. The research team collaborated with Professor Ana Rosas from Chicano/Latino Studies and Professor Bridget Cooks from African-American Studies. In total, the research team worked with over 45 students. Combined with the collaborations that took place in the fall quarter, over 250 students have participated in the project so far. This number will continue to increase after the spring quarter, where the research team will be collaborating with three more faculty from the ethnic studies departments.
Besides the workshops and faculty collaborations, the research team, alongside Stacy Brinkman, Head of the Education and Outreach department, has begun to develop the curriculum for the summer cohort program which will consist of 15 paid internships awarded to undergraduate students. The summer interns will learn about community archives and engage in archival projects with organizations in Orange County.
The research team also presented at the Society of California Archivists' Annual General Meeting in April in Yosemite, California. The panel, titled Transforming Knowledge/Transforming Libraries: A Community-Centered Archives Approach, provided an overview of the project focusing on project design, implementation and early results, as well as expectations and modifications moving forward. The panel consisted of Audra Eagle Yun, Thuy Vo Dang, Ph.D., Jimmy Zavala, Professor Dorothy Fujita-Rony from the Asian-American studies department at UCI and Jillian Cuellar from UCLA's Special Collections department.
