UCI Launches into a Brilliant Future
In an ongoing commitment to give the world a Brilliant Future, the University of California, Irvine launched the largest philanthropic and alumni engagement endeavor in the history of Orange County on October 4, 2019—a campaign to raise $2 billion. UCI Libraries are proud to be part of this historic campaign. Our case for support highlights areas of focus to enhance our services and collections and to empower members of the UCI community to explore, learn and create new knowledge. Hot Off the Press: Queering the Orange Exhibit
The UCI Libraries’ Diversity Team, in conjunction with Special Collections and Archives, created an exhibit about the LGBTQ experience in Orange County since the 1960s, entitled Queering the Orange: Finding Community and Building LGBTQ Culture in Irvine, Orange County, and Online. The exhibit provided a local and regional glimpse of the incredible cultural shift surrounding LGBTQ communities over the past 60 years. The exhibit ran on the 5th floor of the Langson Library from July to mid-October 2019 and was popular across campus and county-wide. For further information, see exhibit write-ups in the Daily Pilot and the OC Register. UCI Libraries curators for this exhibit were Kelsey Brown, Carolyn Downey, Josh Hutchinson and John Renaud.
BrowZine Makes Searching Easier
The UCI Libraries have a new subscription to BrowZine and LibKey from ThirdIron. This service provides one-click access to PDF articles and allows patrons to quickly find, easily follow and directly access scholarly journals. It empowers researchers to find articles in Library Search faster and more efficiently. You can now browse issue content and download articles to read later; create an account to track and stay current within your field; follow journals to be notified of new issues and articles; and download the BrowZine app to do all of this this from your phone or tablet. Dryad Makes Publishing Easier
UC researchers now have access to Dryad, which is an open data publishing platform that makes research data discoverable, freely reusable, and citable. Dryad replaces UC DASH, the University of California’s previous data repository.
The California Digital Library (CDL) Curation Center (UC3) and Dryad co-develop this service that is designed to be a simple data publication tool for researchers to meet funder and publisher mandates. Dryad's newest features make data publishing as easy as possible by offering a variety of additional fields for usage notes, methods, standard vocabularies, as well as increased file size limits. Datasets can be submitted or published at any point during the research process and curators are now available to check submissions to ensure the data is usable.
The new Dryad platform is just a start, CDL UC3 has further plans to build integrations with publishing platforms such as Editorial Manager, ScholarOne, and PubSweet. These platforms will enable more journals to integrate with Dryad. UCI Libraries are excited to work with CDL UC3 in support of Dryad and the needs of researchers through all aspects of the research and publication life cycle.
