Third Annual UCI Libraries' Zinefest

ImageOctober 25th, 2017 was the perfect day for the Third Annual UCI Libraries' Zinefest! Under the canopy of the trees in Gateway Plaza, between Gateway Study Center and Langson Library, 115 students joined the festivities to create their own buttons or zines.

Zines are alternative publications, generally a small circulation of self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images. The primary intent of publication serves as a communication vehicle for various subcultures or social justice movements, which draw inspiration from a "do-it-yourself" philosophy.

One student said, "This is my favorite Library event of the year, I have come all three years." Another student brought his own watercolors to include in his zine creation. Students had the opportunity to donate their zines to the UCI Libraries' Special Collections & Archives, where they will be archived and available for research.

ImageNotably, this year, there were many changes with the popular event including the involvement of more student clubs and organizations. The UCI LGBT Resource Center and Womxn's Hub collaborated and supported this Zinefest through their own zine and publicity. Additionally, UCI Illuminations has sponsored Zinefest for the past three years.

This past Zinefest was one of two 2017-18 events, the second of which will be held Spring Quarter. Also, through the end of fall quarter and winter quarter, Kat Gaffney, Zinefest organizer, will be hosting mini-zine workshops for interested student organizations to create and reproduce zines with their unique messages and stories!

The UCI Libraries' Zinefest 2017-2018 is funded by UCI Illuminations: The Chancellor's Arts & Culture Initiative. Funding from UCI Illuminations has been received by the Libraries every year that the event has been hosted.
