Profiles of Student Success | Athul Janev
Athul Janev is in his second year at UCI studying Biomedical Engineering, and plans to graduate in 2020. We connected with him this fall quarter to ask about his experience in the Libraries, and how its resources and services have impacted his success. Here is what he had to say:
Which library resource(s) or service(s) did you use recently that has helped you to achieve success?
Research Librarians, the Writing 39C Instructional course, the Reference Desk/Check-Out Desk and the Libraries' Communications and Events Office.
What success have you achieved from that resource(s) or service(s), and how has it impacted your student experience at UCI?
I am currently employed as a student assistant within two departments at the UCI Libraries. The first is with the Libraries' Communications and Events Office where I work with other student assistants to help prepare for and coordinate major library events. This includes activities such as mailing invitations, making decorations, setting up and cleaning up, registering guests at events and other necessary miscellaneous tasks. It is a very fun job that requires a lot of teamwork and it has allowed me to meet many new people. Many of the events have some great food too! The position has helped me realize the various opportunities that UCI offers to meet authors, learn about various cultures and help the community.
In my other role, I work within the Libraries' Reference Department as an Ask Us Reference Desk student assistant. This position has also taught me a lot. My duties require that I work at the Ask Us Desk to serve as a welcoming presence to patrons; answering any questions or concerns they have. After receiving many questions, I have gained a great deal of knowledge about the library and researching. I now know how to quickly access UCI sources to use in my own academic career for assignments and research; such as an essay I had to write for my Writing 39C class. I also learned that several forms of media, including films and music, are available through the library and are easy to access. I am excited to be introduced to even more information as I gain greater experience.
UCI Libraries, in partnership with the UCI Office of the Vice Provost of Teaching & Learning - Division of Undergraduate Studies (DUE), presents Profiles of Student Success. A fun campaign to feature student stories that illustrate how the Libraries help them experience success.
