In January 2005, Steve MacLeod joined the Department of Special Collections and Archives as Public Services Coordinator. Formerly the Head of the Langson Library Reference Department, Steve has described this new position as his “dream job” in that it combines a new environment in which to exercise his many years of reference experience with long-standing interests in special collections, the history of printing and book arts, small press poetry, and the history of California literature.

Steve provides leadership and coordination for all aspects of Special Collections and Archives reference, instruction, outreach, and research support programs. He develops and maintains guides, tutorials, and bibliographies to highlight the strengths of the collections and to support the information needs of users. His overall goal is to develop strategies for continually increasing use of collections for research and instructional purposes, by both UCI and community clientele.

“The responsibilities of this new position are a perfect match with my passion for providing quality reference services, my desire to be more involved in teaching students and scholars about primary resources and research skills, and my interest in designing creative and engaging outreach efforts to attract both faculty and students to the outstanding resources available in Special Collections and Archives,” said Steve.

Since January, Steve has organized and taught classes with other Research Librarians and subject bibliographers in Dance, Spanish, and English and Comparative Literature. He is currently collaborating on a web tutorial designed to introduce students to the use of primary resources in their research.

“Special Collections and Archives is such an exciting area to be involved with,” said Steve. “Many of the materials in our area are unique and rare, but they are also extremely important to the scholarly research taking place on campus and, increasingly, to instruction.”

Steve has held previous positions in the Cecil H. Green Library at Stanford University, in the Cubberley Library, also at Stanford, and in the Honnold Library at the Claremont Colleges. He has an M.S. degree in Library and Information Management from USC and a B.A. in Sociology from UC Santa Barbara. Active professionally, he has recently had papers accepted by the American Printing History Association and the California Library Association.
