In Memoriam

An antique Dutch Bible published in 1690 was recently donated to the Libraries by Mrs. Nira Roston. Titled Biblica, dat is, De gantsche H. Schrifture, it is beautifully illustrated with copper engravings depicting maps, plans and excerpts from the scriptures. The Old and New Testament title pages are dated 1618 and 1619, indicating the years in which they were printed.

Nira Roston, a Newport Beach resident, has been actively involved with the Libraries and the campus for many years. The Bible was given to her by a friend who returned with it from a trip to Europe. Mrs. Roston used the book in her own work with students and wanted to extend its educational value to students and scholars at UCI.

Dutch Bible published in 1690.

This extraordinary book will be of interest to faculty and students conducting research in a wide variety of fields, including religious studies, history, and the arts. Because of its age and fragility, the volume will be housed in the Department of Special Collections and Archives.
