Libraries Produce UCI's Bright Past, Brilliant Future Timeline
Early in 2015, the Libraries were approached with the opportunity to host the Bright Past, Brilliant Future pavilion at UCI's Festival of Discovery. Preliminary ideas for the pavilion, included the production of a physical timeline highlighting the past accomplishments and future endeavors of the University.
An internal team comprised of Libraries' staff from Communications and Events, Special Collections an Archives, Library Administration and Design Services teams, launched the curatorial process in spring. Our External Relations Student Assistant and UCI Philosophy graduate student, Kourosh Alizadeh, was also instrumental in providing research by way of University records.
The timeline project was extensive, in its representation of the past 50 years of UCI, through historically accurate copy and photographs. In addition, Dr. Thomas Parham, Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and 50th Anniversary Committee Chair, tasked the Libraries team with developing a narrative that also highlighted the continued global impact of UCI.
By August, a clear narrative had been developed, featuring interdisciplinary influencers, milestones and research. Library Communications and Events and Design Services began working with an outside vendor to design the structure, which would feature photos from University Archives and the Strategic Communications Image Archive.
On October 3, 2015, the Libraries revealed the timeline and celebrated alongside other units and schools, at the UCI Festival of Discovery. The Libraries were honored to showcase the UCI Stories compilation and timeline in the Bright Past. Brilliant Future Pavilion.
The Libraries were also thrilled to highlight the contributions of the following donors on the timeline:
• Jack Langson
• Forest Grunigen
• Francisco Ayala
• GC Brafford
• Barbara Muirhead
• Patrick Hanratty
A pdf of side one and side two of the timeline are available for viewing purposes only. The physical timeline now permanently resides in Newkirk Alumni Center lobby.
