The Libraries Partnership with New Swan Shakespeare Festival in August
The UCI Libraries collaborated with the New Swan Shakespeare Festival on two events in August.
Tuesday, August 12, the Libraries hosted An Evening of Dining and Theater Under the Stars for invited guests of Jack and Shanaz Langson. The evening included a champagne reception that overlooked the New Swan Theater from Langson Library's roof-top terrace, a special viewing of archival materials in the Libraries' Special Collections and Archives Reading Room, and followed with dinner. After dinner, guests enjoyed a special performance of Romeo and Juliet produced by the New Swan Shakespeare Festival.
Jack and Shanaz Langson are generous supporters and loyal friends of the UCI Libraries. They were pleased to host such a wonderful event in the Libraries as they introduced their friends from the Segerstrom Center for the Arts to the Libraries and New Swan Theater.
On August 13 and August 20, the Libraries held Noontime Seminars on Shakespeare in Langson Library’s Caroline A. Laudati Conference Room. Julia Lupton, UCI Professor of English, led presentations on Romeo and Juliet and Twelfth Night.
During the seminars, guests were invited to explore Shakespeare's dramatic poetry, view early printings of the author's plays, and tour the New Swan Shakespeare Theater. Select archival materials were on display in our Special Collections and Archives Reading Room and included our facsimile of Shakespeare's First Folio, Romeo and Juliet, and Twelfth Night. Also on display were items from the Robert Cohen collection. Robert Cohen is UCI's Claire Trevor Professor of Drama and founding chair of UCI's Drama Department.
Julia Reinhard Lupton is an esteemed Shakespearean scholar. She was named a Chancellor's Fellow at UCI in 2007 for her contributions to Shakespeare studies. In 2014, she was elected Trustee of the Shakespeare Association of America. Recent scholarly books include Thinking with Shakespeare: Essays on Politics and Life and Citizen-Saints: Shakespeare and Political Theology. She is the recipient of the 2013-14 Guggenheim Fellowship which supports her current book project, "Shakespeare Dwelling: Habitation, Hospitality, Design."
These seminars were co-sponsored by the Libraries, UCI's School of Humanities and the New Swan Shakespeare Festival.
