The UCI Libraries’ Gateway Study Center, located across the quad from the Langson Library, offers an environment dedicated to quiet study. Open 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. during the quarter and 24-hours per day during pre-finals and finals week, it is a popular facility with students as it provides a quiet, safe study environment where students also can eat and drink. In 2004, the gate count of people entering the center exceeded 304,000. Originally the Gateway Commons food court, the center’s space was renovated and transferred to the Library as a study space in 1990. To enhance the Gateway Study Center in 2001, computing resources were installed to facilitate student study and research. Fifty computer workstations now provide students with access to both the Library’s online resources and other Internet sources. In addition, the center is equipped to provide access to the campus wireless network. Students using their personal laptops with wireless capabilities can access the Internet, including the Library’s online resources.
