Top to bottom: Library Partner Doreen Hamburger & Author Susan Segal

On May 25, over 30 community members attended the Libraries’ first Literary Luncheon, which featured Susan Segal, author of the novel, Aria. The event was held at the beautiful home of Doreen Hamburger, a Library Partner and volunteer, who hosted the event and provided a lovely lunch for the guests.

Segal read excerpts from her book and answered questions about her background and writing style. “It was wonderful to be in a room full of women who are intelligent readers and who take literature seriously,” said Segal. “Doreen’s home created a comfortable venue in which to talk about my book and the influences in my life that led me to write it. I found it very stimulating and gratifying.”

Segal received an M.F.A in Creative Writing from UC Irvine. She currently teaches writing at the University of Southern California and is the Associate Editor for Coast Magazine. Her short stories have been published in Redbook and in literary journals and have won several awards. Aria was published in 2001 and has been optioned to be made into a movie. Doreen Hamburger lives in Corona del Mar and is involved in a variety of community cultural projects. “I really enjoyed hosting this event for the Libraries,” said Doreen. “I regularly attend their events and wanted to lend my time and expertise to help them expand their author programs and engage new members of the community.”
